Attendees to CES explore an immersive 110’ video tunnel made interactive with Intel’s RealSense technology.

Intel wanted to show attendees at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that they don’t just make powerful computer chips. Rather, they create a broad suite of technologies that enable new forms of interactive experience. For CES 2015, what better way to prove this than to give attendees a new kind of experience, something that had never been shown before?

One technology Intel was eager to showcase was their RealSense Depth Sensing Camera. Patten Studio created the RealSense Tunnel, a 110’ responsive video wall at the heart of Intel’s CES 2015 exhibit. Guests to CES used their bodies to explore three interactive scenes, their movement interpreted by 84 RealSense cameras.

Each of the interactive scenes Patten Studio created for the Intel RealSense tunnel was inspired by a game available on the RealSense platform. In Desert, polychromatic sand burst from participants’ silhouettes. In Winter, ice crystals grew on participants, only to be broken apart by motion. In Cosmos, the wave of a hand smashed passing asteroids.

In all, an estimated 143,000 people visited the RealSense Tunnel exhibit—84% CES 2015’s 170,000 attendees. Polled upon exit, 58% of visitors to the RealSense Tunnel said that they were now more likely to purchase Intel products. An impressive 98% of visitors expressed interest in Intel’s products, while 57% of people were made more aware of the capabilities of Intel’s products during their visit.

In addition to the RealSense Tunnel exhibit, the experience Patten Studio designed featured prominently in Intel’s CES keynote presentation, delivered by CEO Brian Krzanich. Three RealSense 3D cameras captured physical data from a live dance troupe performing alongside cellist Zoë Keating, generating real-time projections of the dancers’ reflections in Patten Studio’s Desert scene. Intel’s exhibit was recognized as “Best in Show” by Time magazine, and received extensive press coverage and social sharing for its wildly successful showing at CES 2015.
