Lift is an interactive lighting feature that senses and responds to human activity in its environment
Comprised of 24 geometric petals attached to a single spine, each petal can move up and down in response to motion it detects – fluttering slightly as someone walks beneath it or moving more dramatically in response to wild movements.
Lift is approximately ten feet long and can be installed either as a single piece or as a group to create a larger installation. We can also create custom shapes and sizes. To inquire about purchasing Lift, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Lift started as an internal Patten Studio project. We’re fascinated by the idea that the fields of architecture and interaction design are converging. As digital interactivity enters more and more parts of our day to day existence, the design decisions we make around that interactivity become increasingly important.
We wanted to show a different vision for what that interactivity can feel like when no screens are involved. Interactivity can give an otherwise inanimate object a sense of playfulness. Interactivity can acknowledge your presence when you enter a room. Interactivity can help you relax and make you feel like you belong.
The motion of Lift’s petals is achieved using nitinol, a shape memory alloy. Lift does not use any motors and as a result the motion is completely silent. The nitinol, also known as “muscle wire,” gives the motion a fluid, organic quality.
